With medical school preliminary accreditation granted by the LCME in October 2012, we had the go-ahead to recruit our first class of approximately 50 medical students that will begin in August 2014. We spread the word to outstanding college students from across the US about Western Michigan University School of Medicine (WMed), the new private medical school in Kalamazoo, Michigan. With one tuition rate for both in-state and out-of-state students, we will accept students from all regions of the US. We have preferred relationships with Western Michigan University (WMU), the WMU Lee Honors College and Kalamazoo College. We seek to admit outstanding students from these institutions into each entering medical school class.
In July, we began receiving AMCAS applications from interested applicants. AMCAS is a centralized application processing service for participating US medical schools. In just the first month of the application process, more than 2100 applicants have designated WMed as a medical school where they want their online application sent by AMCAS. We anticipate hundreds more before the application deadline of November 15.
Our Admissions Committee is selecting highly qualified students using a holistic approach that incorporates academic performance, life experiences, personal attributes, and the diversity that an applicant will bring to the medical school. A holistic review of each applicant identifies individuals who will excel in our curriculum and graduate successfully to become an outstanding clinician, educator, researcher, leader and advocate for patients and the medical profession. Our supplemental application as well as a two-step interview process allows an applicant to demonstrate life experiences, personal attributes and diversity. Based on a review of academic metrics, 734 applicants have moved on to the next step in our application process and have been invited to submit a supplemental application as of July 30.
Starting this fall, select applicants will be invited to travel to Kalamazoo for a campus visit and on-site interviews. One of the key components of our on-site interview process is the multiple mini-interview (MMI). This contemporary interview technique is a brief, eight-minute structured interview that enables us to assess applicant attributes. MMIs are very effective in choosing the best students. We are confident that after experiencing Kalamazoo and all that it has to offer, our applicants will be even more excited about accepting an offer from WMed.
We are pleased with the positive response and level of interest from applicants who have a pioneering spirit and aspire to be in our inaugural class. All inquiries about admissions to WMed should be directed to the Director of Admissions at firstname.lastname@example.org or 269.337.6103. Our website at med.wmich.edu/admissions is a valuable resource and we regularly update the website with frequently asked questions and new information.
