WMU School of Medicine is a collaboration that involves Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo’s two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. These three organizations are the named incorporators of the medical school. Each brings leadership and expertise in higher education and clinical care that is necessary as we build upon the legacy of medical education in Kalamazoo. But there is also a fourth collaborator in the medical school and that is the community. We are extremely fortunate to have a strong community of physicians, business leaders, donors, educators, and interested citizens who are engaged with us to make the medical school successful. While the collaborative relationship with the community is much less formal in nature, it is perhaps, even more vital to our success. As 2013 comes to a close and I reflect on the past year, I see the great progress we have made together toward a successful WMU School of Medicine. The dream of a new medical school is coming to life thanks to the hard work and commitment of the entire WMed family – our faculty, administrators, staff, residents, Board of Directors, and … the community of southwest Michigan. We are honored to build upon the legacy of medical education in Kalamazoo and thank you for your engagement with us. Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous new year.
