As an orthopaedic care center, our physicians specialize in dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and ligaments in adults and children. Our specialists are also trained in complex orthopaedic procedures that may require subspecialty skills including treatment of the children's orthopaedic disorders, scoliosis, sports medicine, complex shoulder and elbow problems, joint replacements, and fracture care.
The Department includes two faculty physicians employed by the medical school and approximately 27 community physicians who participate in our teaching and research programs.
Among our employed faculty, Dr. Joseph Chess specializes in care for fracture and trauma cases. Dr. Karen Bovid, specializing in pediatric and adolescent orthopaedics. Brace treatment is offered in our clinic as well. Our faculty provides interdisciplinary orthopaedic care.
At the WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Clinics on the Oakland Drive Campus, the Department provides outpatient services in the Spinal, Trauma, Shoulder, Sports Medicine, Pediatric and Interdisciplinary Clinics. Our employed faculty provide approximately 5,000 patient visits each year. The clinic faculty is supported by skilled nurses and a Physician Assistant in the setting of the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) to improve the quality of care provided. Our staff includes on-site radiology services with radiology technicians and an orthopaedic technician.
