Welcome to the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) Department of Surgery. As the Program Director of General Surgery at WMed, I thank you for taking the opportunity to visit our website, and I hope that you will consider us for the upcoming interview season.
Located in Southwest Michigan and partnered with two major healthcare systems, Borgess Medical Center and Bronson Methodist Hospital, we believe our program is unique. It provides our residents with an excellent surgical education rich in medical knowledge and procedural skills.
The WMed General Surgery Residency Program’s first-time pass rate on the American Board of Surgery Qualifying Exam (ABS-QE) is 100% as seen in the most recent 5-year national data on board pass rates; this places us among the top programs in the country. We have developed a strong educational program that includes morbidity and mortality conferences, multidisciplinary conferences, SCORE curriculum lectures, teaching attending rounds, grand rounds, journal club, oral board exam review, as well as a weekly ABSITE-oriented quiz review based on both SCORE and M&M cases. In addition, our program provides excellent hands-on training both in the simulation (animal, cadaver, and dry labs) and operating room environments. In addition, our residents are equipped with excellent resources and support to do clinical research.
Sixty-five percent of our chief residents have gone on to subspecialty training fellowships of their choice (including Trauma/Critical Care, Vascular, Plastics, Colorectal, MIS, and Cardiothoracic Surgery), while the remaining 35% chose to practice as general surgeons. Our graduates have the confidence and competence to operate independently. Our chief residents graduate with an average of 1100-1200 cases each (national average is 1000 cases), which exceeds the operative requirements established by the ABS in all important categories.
Again thank you and please if you have specific questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
