Western Michigan University School of Medicine (WMed) announces preferred relationships with Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. WMed seeks to admit outstanding students from these institutions into each entering medical school class.
“WMed seeks the best and brightest students from across the US – of course this includes from our own backyard,” says Peter Ziemkowski, MD, associate dean for student affairs. “It makes sense that we would wish to keep the very best students from our neighboring institutions in the Kalamazoo community for medical education.”
Students from these institutions will apply to WMed through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), a centralized application processing service only available to applicants to the first-year entering classes at participating US medical schools, will be selected through the regular selection process, and must meet all admission requirements.
"We are excited about this relationship between K and Western Michigan University School of Medicine," said Kalamazoo College Provost Mickey McDonald. "This acknowledges the strength of K's Health Sciences Program and provides K graduates an opportunity to pursue a medical degree while remaining in southwest Michigan."
"This is a wonderful example of the kind of collaboration and institutional benefits we knew would develop when the idea of a medical school was first proposed," says Dr. Timothy J. Greene, WMU provost and vice president for academic affairs. "For many years, we've had our students go on to attend some of the top medical schools in the nation. Now, we'll be able to add our own medical school into that mix and enhance the opportunities for top students who'd like to stay in Kalamazoo and build their careers here. This program is a net gain for our students and the community."
In early July, the WMed Office of Admissions began to receive the AMCAS applications from interested students across the US who aspire to be part of its first class of 50 medical students to begin August 2014. As of July 30, more than 2100 applicants have designated WMed as a medical school where they want their online application sent to by AMCAS.
Based on a review of GPA and MCAT scores, 734 applicants have been invited to submit a supplemental application. This is the next step in the medical school admissions process that incorporates a holistic review to give consideration to the breadth of life experiences, personal attributes, and academic metrics that reflect the value a student brings to the medical school learning community. WMed will accept applications until November 15, 2013.
